About a month ago I posted a tidbit about getting rid of Comcast [except for Internet]. Following the post, I received many emails asking for more details. I think if more people knew the pros and cons and how to go about "cutting the cord," then they would. If you aren't sure about making this big move, try some of the FREE trials below before cancelling your cable TV. Here's what we did:
[Step 1] Pros and Cons
Other than cleaning out the "Comcast Nest" of cables in our entertainment center, we are saving a ton of money. For many of you, merely saving around $100/month is enough. If that is the case, skip to step 2. Before actually making the move, my husband and I went through a list of pros and cons:
Pro:
- Avoid Comcast's unpredictable billing tactics [they are a roller coaster!]
- No more equipment rentals [Roku Box is a one time purchase]
- Roku streams in full high-def with wifi [among many other great things about the Roku Box including streaming Pandora, YouTube, and more]
- Hulu Plus and Netflix Steaming are both much cheaper than ONE cable box!
- ESPN3 streams ALL live sports shown on ESPN.
- Local/network channels are available over-the-air
Cons:
- Live sports are a little tough to get streaming. My husband is a huge Seattle Mariners fan. He can't watch live games anymore [all games are broadcast on Root Sports cable network]. Luckily he's enough of a "baseball purist" that he loves to listen to games on the radio.
- That's about it...a big deal, but we can and are dealing with it.
[Step 2] Call Comcast
Call your cable provider. They aren't going to be thrilled that you are going to leave them. In fact, this is one strategy to employee in trying to temporarily bring your bill down. You are still going to need them on your side [as you are keeping their Internet service] so try to work a deal. Work on getting local channels thrown in [limited cable...so you don't have to get the over-the-air antenna set up right away]. We pay $45 for limited cable and high speed internet now!
[Step 3] Get your Roku Box[es] ordered

[Step 4] Sign up for Hulu Plus-2 Week FREE Trial [I get 2 Weeks FREE when you sign up too...WIN-WIN]

[Step 5] Sign up for Netflix Steaming-1 Month FREE Trial

I am thankful I won't be calling Comcast next month asking why my bill went up another $5. You will be too!
